astName%22%3A%22Malkov%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22presenter%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Jason%20M.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Johnson%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22presenter%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Sally%20D.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Herschorn%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22presenter%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Gretchen%20L.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Gierach%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22Introduction%3A%20The%20etiology%20of%20breast%20cancer%20remains%20an%20area%20of%20ongoing%20investigation.%20Improving%20our%20understanding%20of%20factors%20associated%20with%20breast%20cancer%20development%20will%20strengthen%20the%20utility%20of%20risk%20prediction%20strategies%20and%20improve%20risk%20stratification.%20Mammographic%20breast%20density%20remains%20one%20of%20the%20most%20influential%20breast%20cancer%20risk%20factors%2C%20with%204%20to%206%20fold%20elevated%20risk%20observed%20among%20women%20with%20the%20highest%20compared%20to%20the%20lowest%20levels.%20These%20associations%20have%20consistently%20been%20observed%20irrespective%20of%20the%20method%20%28visual%20or%20automated%29%2C%20used%20to%20quantify%20breast%20density%2C%20showing%20the%20robustness%20of%20the%20associations.%20An%20understudied%20breast%20cancer%20risk%20factor%20is%20the%20bilateral%20asymmetry%20of%20mammographic%20features%2C%20with%20prior%20studies%20suggesting%20that%20women%20with%20higher%20levels%20of%20breast%20asymmetry%20may%20be%20at%20elevated%20breast%20cancer%20risk.%20Increasingly%2C%20studies%20are%20recognizing%20the%20potential%20of%20bilateral%20breast%20asymmetry%20defined%20by%20mammographic%20breast%20density%20in%20determining%20breast%20cancer%20risk.%20Recently%2C%20Eriksson%20and%20colleagues%20highlighted%20a%20strong%20influence%20of%20breast%20asymmetry%20within%20a%20model%20they%20developed%20to%20predict%20short-term%20breast%20cancer%20risk%20among%20women%20attending%20breast%20screening.%20They%20observed%20that%20the%20contribution%20to%20the%20model%20of%20asymmetry%20in%20mammographic%20breast%20density%2C%20microcalcifications%2C%20and%20masses%20between%20the%20breasts%20was%20as%20substantial%20as%20the%20total%20number%20of%20microcalcifications%20and%20masses%20found%20within%20a%20mammogram%2C%20indicating%20that%20differences%20between%20the%20breasts%20may%20be%20an%20important%20risk%20marker.%20To%20help%20further%20understand%20associations%20between%20breast%20cancer%20risk%20factors%20and%20asymmetry%20of%20breast%20density%2C%20particularly%20among%20women%20at%20elevated%20risk%20for%20breast%20cancer%2C%20we%20evaluated%20risk%20factor%20relationships%20with%20the%20bilateral%20asymmetry%20of%20volumetric%20measures%20of%20global%20and%20local%20breast%20density%20across%20the%20spectrum%20of%20premalignant%20and%20invasive%20breast%20cancer%20diagnoses.%20Methods%3A%20This%20study%20included%20882%20women%20enrolled%20as%20part%20of%20the%20National%20Cancer%20Institute%27s%20Breast%20Radiology%20Evaluation%20and%20Study%20of%20Tissues%20%28BREAST%29-Stamp%20Project%20%282007-2010%29.%20The%20BREAST-Stamp%20Project%20is%20a%20cross-sectional%20molecular%20epidemiologic%20study%20that%20aims%20to%20understand%20how%20novel%20breast%20density%20measures%20are%20related%20to%20breast%20cancer%20etiology.%20Women%20were%20enrolled%20if%20they%20were%20referred%20for%20diagnostic%20image-guided%20breast%20biopsy%20following%20an%20abnormal%20mammogram%20at%20the%20University%20of%20Vermont%20Medical%20Center%2C%20and%20had%20not%20previously%20been%20diagnosed%20or%20treated%20for%20cancer%2C%20undergone%20breast%20surgery%20within%20one%20year%20or%20received%20chemoprevention.%20Risk%20factor%20data%20were%20collected%20at%20study%20enrolment%20via%20interview%20and%20self-administered%20questionnaires.%20Breast%20density%20measures%20were%20estimated%20using%20Single%20X-ray%20Absorptiometry%20%28SXA%29%2C%20a%20technique%20in%20which%20an%20SXA%20breast%20density%20phantom%20was%20affixed%20to%20the%20compression%20paddle%20of%20the%20mammography%20machine%20during%20routine%20mammography%20so%20that%20it%20was%20included%20in%20the%20X-ray%20field.%20It%20served%20as%20a%20reference%20standard%20to%20estimate%20volumetric%20breast%20density.%20Breast%20density%20was%20assessed%20using%20pre-biopsy%20craniocaudal%20full-field%20digital%20mammograms%20of%20both%20the%20ipsilateral%20%28affected%29%20and%20contralateral%20%28unaffected%29%20breast.%20Firstly%2C%20global%20density%20from%20each%20laterality%20was%20determined%20as%20percent%20fibroglandular%20volume%20%28%25FGV%29.%20Secondly%2C%20localized%20volumetric%20density%20measures%20were%20estimated%20following%20identification%20of%20the%20biopsy%20site%20on%20the%20ipsilateral%20pre-biopsy%20mammogram%20by%20the%20study%20radiologist%20and%20identifying%20the%20corresponding%20site%20on%20the%20contralateral%20mammogram.%20The%20SXA%20estimated%20%25FGV%20in%20a%20perilesional%20volume%20twice%20the%20size%20of%2C%20but%20excluding%2C%20the%20biopsy%20target%2C%20centered%20at%20the%20biopsy%20site.%20Previous%20estimates%20of%20reproducibility%20for%20the%20SXA%20test%20phantoms%20demonstrated%20a%20repeatability%20SD%20of%202%25%2C%20with%20a%20%5Cu00b12%25%20accuracy%20for%20the%20entire%20thickness%20and%20density%20ranges.%20Breast%20density%20asymmetry%20was%20defined%20as%20an%20absolute%20bilateral%20difference%20in%20measures%20when%20subtracting%20the%20breast%20density%20measures%20of%20the%20contralateral%20breast%20from%20the%20ipsilateral%20measures.%20Spearman%27s%20correlations%20%28rho%29%20examined%20associations%20between%20breast%20density%20measures%20of%20the%20left%20and%20right%20breasts.%20To%20determine%20relationships%20between%20breast%20cancer%20risk%20factors%20%28defined%20as%20categorical%20variables%29%20and%20measures%20of%20bilateral%20breast%20density%20asymmetry%2C%20analysis%20of%20covariance%20%28ANCOVA%29%20models%20%28PROC%20GLM%29%20were%20used.%20Analyses%20were%20conducted%20at%20the%20per%20woman%20level%20using%20SAS.%20Probability%20values%20of%20%26lt%3B0.05%20were%20considered%20statistically%20significant%2C%20and%20all%20tests%20were%20two-tailed.%20Results%3AWe%20initially%20investigated%20asymmetry%20within%20each%20woman%20by%20examining%20correlations%20between%20breast%20density%20measures%20in%20the%20left%20and%20right%20breasts.%20Strong%2C%20positive%20correlations%20between%20the%20ipsilateral%20and%20contralateral%20breast%20were%20observed%20for%20each%20breast%20density%20measure%20%28rho%20for%20global%20%25FGV%3D0.89%2C%20p-value%26lt%3B0.0001%3B%20rho%20for%20local%20%25FGV%3D0.79%2C%20p-value%26lt%3B0.0001%29.%20Breast%20asymmetry%20was%20observed%20in%20the%20majority%20of%20the%20study%20population.%20For%20global%20%25FGV%2C%2076%25%20of%20women%20had%20a%20bilateral%20difference%20%5Cu22652%25%2C%20with%2043%25%20of%20women%20having%20higher%20%25FGV%20in%20their%20ipsilateral%20affected%20breast%20and%2033%25%20having%20higher%20in%20their%20contralateral%20unaffected%20breast.%20For%20localized%20%25FGV%2C%20the%20majority%20of%20women%20had%20differences%20between%20their%20two%20breasts%20%2889%25%29%2C%20with%2061%25%20of%20women%20having%20higher%20localized%20%25FGV%20in%20their%20ipsilateral%20affected%20breast%20compared%20to%20the%20remaining%2028%25%20who%20had%20higher%20localized%20breast%20density%20in%20their%20unaffected%20breast.%20We%20next%20examined%20relationships%20between%20breast%20cancer%20risk%20factors%20and%20breast%20asymmetry.%20Overall%2C%20no%20associations%20were%20observed%20between%20any%20of%20the%20risk%20factors%20examined%2C%20including%20age%2C%20race%2C%20body%20mass%20index%2C%20education%2C%20menopausal%20status%2C%20menopausal%20hormone%20therapy%20use%20with%20absolute%20bilateral%20differences%20in%20global%20or%20localized%20%25FGV.%20Among%20the%20study%20population%2C%20most%20women%20had%20a%20benign%20breast%20disease%20diagnosis%2C%20with%2033%25%20and%2043%25%20being%20diagnosed%20with%20benign%20non-proliferative%20and%20benign%20proliferative%20lesions%2C%20respectively.%20Of%20the%20study%20population%2C%2015%25%20were%20diagnosed%20with%20invasive%20breast%20cancer.%20Overall%2C%20no%20differences%20were%20observed%20in%20bilateral%20differences%20in%20global%20%25FGV%20according%20to%20diagnosis%3B%20however%2C%20higher%20mean%20bilateral%20differences%20in%20localized%20%25FGV%20were%20observed%20for%20women%20with%20invasive%20compared%20to%20other%20diagnoses%20including%20benign%20and%20in-situ%20lesions%20%28p%3D0.056%29.%20Discussion%20and%20conclusions%3A%20Our%20findings%20showed%20that%20breast%20asymmetry%2C%20defined%20by%20bilateral%20differences%20in%20global%20and%20localized%20mammographic%20breast%20density%2C%20was%20mostly%20unrelated%20to%20breast%20cancer%20risk%20factors%20among%20women%20undergoing%20an%20image%20guided%20breast%20biopsy.%20We%20observed%20that%20localized%20measures%2C%20defined%20according%20to%20within-woman%20bilateral%20differences%20in%20localized%20%25FGV%20surrounding%20a%20suspicious%20lesion%20as%20compared%20with%20localized%20%25FVG%20in%20a%20comparable%20location%20in%20the%20contralateral%20breast%2C%20may%20be%20an%20indication%20of%20cancer.%20This%20investigation%20is%20currently%20ongoing%20and%20efforts%20are%20underway%20to%20replicate%20findings%20using%20evolving%20image%20analysis%20methods%20such%20as%20Volpara%20Density%20Maps%2C%20an%20FDA-approved%20breast%20imaging%20tool%20which%20provides%20volumetric%20estimates%20of%20local%20glandular%20tissue%20distribution.%20Further%2C%20the%20ascertainment%20of%2010-year%20follow-up%20data%20within%20this%20study%20population%20is%20in%20progress%2C%20which%20will%20facilitate%20prospective%20investigations%20of%20the%20relationship%20between%20breast%20asymmetry%20and%20breast%20cancer%20risk.%20Ongoing%20work%20will%20also%20extend%20our%20understanding%20of%20whe
