Please review our Data Request and Publication Policy before viewing this page.
Process of Review and Approval
- This policy serves as guidance to track ongoing publications and grant applications with the goal to avoid competing analyses and efforts.
- Interested scientists (faculty or trainee) wanting to use data from an SRL study will submit a form outlining their request to prepare an abstract, a manuscript, or a grant application.
- Before data are released to the authors, each request will be reviewed and approved by the Principal Investigators and circulated among the Investigators to obtain input.
- All ongoing abstracts for conferences, manuscripts, and grant proposals will be tracked in a database. The lead investigators of the projects will provide monthly status updates.
- Newly measured analytes or variables created in statistical analyses will be returned to the study base.
Manuscripts
- The writing group for a publication will always include one Principal Investigator as the last author. In addition, it may include trainees, study coordinators, and other personnel as authors, providing that each author is involved in the planning, analysis, and writing of the paper. The list of planned authors and their orders will be documented on the request form.
- If no progress was made on a manuscript for a long time period, the Principal Investigators may decide to terminate or reassign a project.
- All scientific, federal, or commercial organizations providing funding will be recognized in the Acknowledgments.
- Publication costs may be covered by the Principal Investigators on a case-by-case basis after a request is made.
- If necessary, the following Data Availability Statement can be added: Some studies include data that cannot be made publicly available because they contain patient identifying information. Data are available from these SRL studies for researchers who meet the criteria for access to confidential data. For details and to request an application, please contact John Shepherd, johnshep@hawaii.edu.
Grants
- Requests for biologic samples from study participants will need to obtain peer-reviewed funding before specimens are provided for analysis.
- If none of the project investigators have sufficient scientific background to review the pertinent material, outside expert consultants will be invited to critique the material.
- Reasonable costs for preparation of datasets and retrieval of biologic samples will be charged.
